Rotten Tomatoes Media Overview Pages

Context

The Media Overview page is the highest trafficked page on Rotten Tomatoes which includes a high level summary of the critics & audience score and additional information about the film or TV show such as cast & crew, trailers, and synopsis. The old design of the page was successful in communicating the scores, yet had low time on site metric which lead to a YoY decrease in ad impressions, video plays, and affiliate out-clicks to streaming partners.

Working with our product, marketing, and UX teams, I designed a refresh for this page that allowed for increased discoverability of trailers, listing, watch options, and ad-impressions via internal links to support page views. After 4 months since the new design was launched, we saw a 5% increase in time on site metrics, 102% increase in watchlist interactions, and 107% increase in outclicks to streaming partners. Partnering with our Business Intelligence team, we are continuing to optimize the design to further improve video play metrics.

Design Approach

The main design approach was to include more tappable elements above the fold and introduce flexible content modules that would allow for content to be more dynamic depending on seasonal business needs. As part of the refresh, I also introduced an updated visual language, paired with an updated design system, to deliver a more modern experience to the end user. We also enhanced the SEO elements of the page to improve our rankings on search engines.
